Library Loot XLIX

Library Loot is a weekly event co-hosted by Claire from The Captive Reader and Marg from The Adventures of an Intrepid Reader that encourages bloggers to share the books they’ve checked out from the library. If you’d like to participate, just write up your post-feel free to steal the button-and link it using the Mr. Linky any time during the week. And of course check out what other participants are getting from their libraries! This week's Library Loot is at Claire's

I have a wish list of library books about a mile long these days, but only borrow half a dozen or so at a time so I'm not too pressured by due dates. I still have two books out from the library since my last loot from over a month ago--If I Die by Rachel Vincent and Crazy Sexy Diet by Kris Carr, the latter of which I'm almost finished reading. This week, though, I picked up two more books when I returned the others. I'm also on the holds list for three popular new releases and as anxious as I am to read all three of them, I sure hope they don't become available at the same time! The loan period for new releases is 14 days with no renewals if there's someone one the list behind you and of course there are people on the list behind me for all three books! Talk about pressure!!! This is what I borrowed this week:

Sliver Sparrow by Tayari Jones

I first learned of this book in January when I read Brie's review on her blog Musings of a Bibliophile. I immediately added the book to my library reads list. As what happens often, I didn't run out and borrow the book right away. But then the book popped up as a potential selection for the March book in one of my book clubs and I knew it was a sign that I should read it. And also a sign that I would finally participate in book club after being a member for months! Woops. I came home with this one on Monday night and I'm already more than half way through reading this very riveting, sad coming-of-age novel.

Amulet: The Last Council by Kazu Kibuishi
Amulet series, Book #4

I was so excited to see that my library finally got the fourth book in this fun fantasy graphic novel series that my youngest daughter and I both enjoy. I went to grab it and decided to grab the first three books again, too... in case we wanted a refresher. They're quick reads but jam packed with mystery, danger and some considerable depth of emotion for a comic.

What are you reading right now?

  1. 14 days? Wow. All our books (new or old) can be checked out for 28 days. I would have a ton of unread if I only had half that time.
I'm very interested in Amulet so I'll be checking that out soon. Enjoy your loot.

  2. Our new books are the same time limit as yours. I try to read those first. My daughter likes the Amulet books, too. *g*
Right now I'm trying to find time to read Bear Meets Girl by Shelly Laurenston.
Hope you're having a great week!

  3. Ooh, I may need to check out that graphic novel series. I want to try some more in the genre now that I have read Anya's Ghost. Now I feel the need to hit up my local library. :)

  4. I hate reading to a deadline! Most of my library books have a 21 day loan period and can be renewed (the genius of reading obscure books is that no one else puts holds on them) but then there are fast reads (7 days and no renewals) or books from the university library (14 days and no renewals). No matter how eager I was to get the book beforehand, once I have a short-term deadline to work to I suddenly find that's the last thing I want to read! Happens almost every time.

    Enjoy your loot!

  5. We have a 28 day loan period except for really popular new releases which are 14 but as long as no one else has requested the book we can renew it up to 3 times.

    Enjoy your loot!

  6. My holds at the library always seem to come in together. And it never fails that at least one book goes back unread :) These both look interesting so I hope you get the chance to read them!

  7. Right now I'm reading The Marriage Bargain by Jennifer Probst, Cassie's Grand Plan by Emmie Dark and Caught in the Act by Jill Sorenson, and by "I'm reading" I mean I'll read this week, I can't read more than one book at a time and if I do it means that the book I was reading first wasn't working for me.

So far Emmie Dark's book is going well, The Marriage Bargain has great reviews and everything Jill Sorenson writes is awesome so I think I'll have a good week!

I'm very curious about Silver Sparrow now...

  9. That's so cool that you and your youngest are enjoying the same series. I love talking books with my kids!

  10. Oh, I do like the sound of the grapic novel series!

Can you freeze your library holds? I can...if the books aren't available. (There used to be that option a few years ago, but we lost it with an upgrade and no one seems to want to bring it back.) I have all my holds frozen (although I still move up the list until I hit No. 1 and that's when my hold is frozen) and I unfreeze them as I go.

Currently reading Archangel's Blade, and it's goooood (and dark), and I've just unfrozen Treachery In Death! Am wondering if Roarke will keep out of this case, but somehow I don't think so :)

  11. I get e-books and you can get them for 7-14-21 days. As of now I can't figure out a way to re-new them. When they are due back, you can no longer 'open' the book.

I have 5 books out right now. I'm pretty sure some will not be read.

  12. I have Silver Sparrow on my to be read list too. I hope to get to it soon, I'm even more excited to read it now that it's won an Indie Book Award (for best fiction).

  13. Shame on me for neglecting to reply to all of you! So sorry!!!

Just wanted to let all of you know that I read Silver Sparrow and was very moved by this heart rending story. I won't soon forget this one, that's for sure. Thanks to Tanya Patrice for letting us know it was awarded the Indie Book Award for best fiction. Wow that's awesome!
