Haruki Murakami Reading Challenge 2012

I forgot to post this one in January! I joined this challenge last year and barely met the challenge, having read After the Quake in the last days of December. After the Quake is a collection of four short stories by Haruki Murakami which I did enjoy. This year, I'd like to read one of Murakami's full length novels. I'm leaning towards Sputnik Sweetheart, although the year is young and I may change my mind a few times before I finally decide.

The Haruki Murakami Reading Challenge 2012 is hosted yet again by tanabata.

To learn more about this challenge and the works of Haruki Murakami, visit the Haruki Murakami Reading Challenge blog.

You can also browse Murakami's books and reader reviews for said books on goodreads

Have you read a Haruki Murakami novel before? If yes, which one(s)?

Do you think you might be interested in reading one of his novels?

  1. I read After Dark and 1Q84 and have Norwegian Wood on Kindle, and The Wind Up Bird Chronicle on my desk. I also joined the challenge but have not yet delved more than several chapters into the last two books. Have fun!

    1. @Harvee thanks for you comment! I was considering both After Dark and Norwegian Wood for the challenge last year, but ended up reading After the Quake instead. Honestly because it was shortest and I was under pressure to meet the challenge in late December! HA!

I'm intimidated by 1Q84 because of it's length and apparent complexity, but at the same time I'm so curious.. Congrats on scoring that awesome UK/Australian copy! It's gorgeous!

I can't wait to hear what you think of the Murakami books you read this year!

  7. Hello Christine!
I've read South of the Border, West of the Sun and I enjoyed it. His style isn't something I usually like because his characters are very introspective, a bit too much I'd say..or at least the protagonist in this book was. But the book had a...certain feeling that I liked being involved in, you know?
But I'll read another one, yes...Sputnik Sweetheart because I own it lol
    Take care!

    1. @sonia... Hi!
".. his characters are very introspective, a bit too much I'd say.."
Yes! That's such a good description.. I have to agree with you there. I want to think and put things together in a story, but I don't want to have to think SO hard trying to figure out exactly what the heck a character is doing or saying or feeling ,etc.
"But the book had a ... certain feeling that I liked being involved in, you know?"
Yes! I know what you mean. I felt that way with After the Quake, too.

You HAVE Sputnik Sweetheart??? How serendipitous. Now you can read it with me when I get to it! ;) No pressure. :)

  8. Lol..hello again :)
Yes, Sputnik Sweetheart is one of those books way into my TBR list and I wasn't planning on reading is soon but if you're really going to read it I won't mind reading it too, it's an extra motif if someone else is reading...
When were you planning to? I'm afraid this month I can't I'm full :)

    1. @sonia ... I'm in no rush to read Sputnik Sweetheart nor do I have a plan. If left to my own devices, I'd probably end up reading it in December just because I am an expert procrastinator. ;)

I'll tell you what. I'll give you a heads up when I think I'm going to give it a go and if the timing and mood strikes you, I'd love if you joined me and read it as well. If not.. no worries! :)

Ok, this works for me...when you feel it's the right time, say something! My book isn't going anywhere anyway :)
