Library Loot LIV

Library Loot is a weekly event co-hosted by Claire from The Captive Reader and Marg from The Adventures of an Intrepid Reader that encourages bloggers to share the books they’ve checked out from the library. If you’d like to participate, just write up your post-feel free to steal the button-and link it using the Mr. Linky any time during the week. And of course check out what other participants are getting from their libraries!

I had a happy library looting the other day. As if there's any other kind...

The Witness by Nora Roberts
I've been waiting weeks and weeks and weeks and I finally got the call. It's my turn to read The Witness by Nora Roberts. I'm so excited. Funny thing is, I haven't really read a whole lot of Ms. Roberts' romances, yet she is still my most read author on goodreads. [Go to My Books in your profile then scroll down. On the left sidebar there is a link to your most read authors under tools]. She is my #1 most read author as J.D. Robb [30 books so far] and tied for #7 as Nora Roberts [9 books so far]. Anyway, The Witness is Nora Roberts' most recent release and her 200th full length novel! So impressive! More importantly, it has been getting really wonderful reviews, so I'm really looking forward to it. I'm going to start reading it as soon as I finish my current read. Probably by the weekend.

I also picked up two FABULOUS cookbooks from the new release shelf at my library. I've already thumbed through both of these and I love them.

The Mom 100 Cookbook by Katie Workman
Dinner: A Love Story by Jenny Rosenstrach

Oh! And from last week, which I didn't get around to posting, I borrowed this:

Wheat Belly by William Davis, MD
Published by Rodale books [<<--love them], this book is very, very informative on the startling connections between the excess of wheat in the typical American diet and belly fat! Lose the wheat, lose the weight. From what I've read so far, and based on my experience having gone gluten free for three weeks .. I believe it.

What are you reading right now?

  1. Wow! the Wheat books looks very interesting.

And I'm intrigued by Dinner: A Love Story.

I hope you enjoy the books :d

  3. Alex .. Dinner: A Love Story is wonderful! I didn't take the time to write more about it in this post, but the author has a blog with the same name: http://www.dinneralovestory.com/ Go explore! :)

Phyl .. Wow. I am not the least bit surprised to hear that Wheat Belly has changed your life, but I'd love to hear more! Have you eliminated wheat completely or have you just drastically reduced it? I am working on drastically reducing right now.. but could definitely see myself going 98% wheat free.

    Excited to read The Witness!

    1. After reading WB, I went on to read some stuff by Gary Taubes and Robb Wolf. I'm trying to go paleo. I've eliminated wheat 100% and avoid beans and other grains. I'll eat a little potato and sometimes a little corn. Otherwise it's all veggies, fruit, and meat. Joint inflammation is way, way down and my blood sugar is nice and stable (I'm pre-diabetic). Email me if you want to talk more about it :-)

    2. That's a fantastic improvement to your health, Phyl. I'm so proud of you for making this kind of change and trying to go paleo. It's SO SO SO hard to do in our food culture.

    3. Phyl, just a few minutes ago I got an email newsletter for triathlon training about triathlon or endurance sport training while on low/no carb or paleo diets. It links to a podcast by Robb Wolf. How's that for coincidence? I haven't listened to it yet, but I will. Especially because one of my concerns about going no/low carb is how to fuel my workouts... particularly on days when I bike for 2-7 hours.

    4. Thanks, Christine! And how funny about the Robb Wolf podcast. I've listened to parts of a few and they're helpful. I admit I pretty much ignore the ones about sports training since I keep my exercise pretty basic (although I am faithful about it). I also subscribe to his blog in my reader.

Since you like cookbooks so much, let me recommend Paleo Comfort Foods : Homestyle Cooking for a Gluten-Free Kitchen by Julie & Charles Mayfield. It has lots and lots of pictures and a helpful introduction about basic foods a paleo kitchen should stock. The chicken & grape salad is seriously good. We've also liked the cole slaw, jambalaya, and the chicken breast with mushroom sauce.

OK, I'll stop hijacking your library loot thread now. Go read The Witness :)

  6. Hmm, I've been slowly trying to get hubs to accept possibly going gluten free, or at lease cutting more of it out of our lives. Maybe this book would help!
Right now I'm reading No One Left To Tell by Karen Rose. (And after that I actually have a TBR pile. First one EVER. God Bless the library.)
I read The Witness. I can't wait to hear your thoughts on it.

    Blessings for a wonderful weekend!

  7. Brandy ... If your library doesn't have Wheat Belly, you should ask them to order it for you. You'd be surprised how willing libraries are to fulfill book requests.

Going wheat free [or gluten free] is a tough lifestyle change, but from what I've read from a lot of sources in the last six months or so, it's a smart one AND not as bad as you think once you get into it. Like any major lifestyle change, I think it takes 4-8 weeks to really get into a groove. I won't say those 4-8 weeks aren't challenging.. but if you think about it, it's not such a terrible thing to endure for a relatively short period of time when you're talking your health and long term well being. Now if I could just practice what I preach ...

Are you caught up on that Karen Rose series? I know several bloggers who LOVE it. Am thinking of doing a challenge with that one once I'm caught up in the In Death series.

Wishing you a fantastic weekend, too! :D

  8. Yay on getting the Witness! I hope you've had a chance to read it this weekend. :P I really enjoyed it and my mom is reading it right now. I can't wait for her to finish so I can re-read it! LOL

And thanks for that's GR tip. :)

  9. Can I respectfully suggest Nora Roberts' Chesapeake Bay series? They are all very good, but I loved the first most of all. I haven't read many of NR's books, but these are my favourites.

  10. I love the roman numerals for the Library Loot, very inventive!

Ooooooh, Nora Roberts. I don't usually read her myself because I tend to do J.D. Robb and she's my top read author! Quite coincidental? haha. I really love the In Death series, but usually I don't like the straight romance.

It'll be interesting to hear if you enjoy The Witness!

  11. I really liked The Witness! She is still at the top of her game with that book! oh, and the Chesapeake books are fabulous!

I would like to get Dinner: A Love Story too but I don't know if my library will get it or not!
