Library Loot XLI

Library Loot is a weekly event co-hosted by Claire from The Captive Reader and Marg from The Adventures of an Intrepid Reader that encourages bloggers to share the books they’ve checked out from the library. If you’d like to participate, just write up your post-feel free to steal the button-and link it using the Mr. Linky any time during the week. And of course check out what other participants are getting from their libraries! This week's Library Loot is at Claire's.

This is my first library loot post since June (!),  but I promise you I have been to the library in between. Mostly to borrow and return books for my youngest and I did some browsing, but I didn't borrow many books for myself over the summer. Instead, I actually read books from my own shelf!

Aside from Grave Sight, which I borrowed, read and returned in July, here is what I have out from the library right now:

Grave Sight
Grave Surprise
An Ice Cold Grave
Grave Secret

These are the books from the Harper Connelly mystery series by Charlaine Harris. Grave Sight was the book selection for the Authors by the Alphabet Book Club for the month of July. I enjoyed the book--and Harper's character in particular, that I decided to continue with the series. I've already finished reading the second book, Grave Surprise and am reading An Ice Cold Grave right now.

Murder on the Eiffel Tower by Claude Izner

This one caught my eye when I was browsing the mystery aisle of the library just days after returning from a vacation in Europe that started in Paris. I read the first couple of pages and wasn't feeling it, but I'll try again.

Anne Frank:
The Anne Frank House authorized Graphic Biography
by Sid Jacobson and Ernie Colón

I came across this while browsing the graphic novel shelves and of course wanted to read it since I had just visited the Anne Frank House in Amsterdam last month.

Beowolf adapted and illustrated by Gareth Hinds

Would you believe I am not familiar with the story of Beowolf at all? I've discovered graphic novels are a great short cut education to some classics and with beautiful artwork to boot. I read Hinds' adaptation of The Odyssey earlier this year and thought the illustrations were so detailed, rich and expressive. I'm looking forward to reading Beowolf.

Iron Queen by Julie Kagawa
The Iron Fey series, Book 3

My Soul to Steal by Rachel Vincent
The Soul Screamers series, Book 4

I have been waiting and waiting and waiting for one of my local libraries to get these two books in. I've been sitting on a cliff hanger in both of these series for months and months. Now I can finally find out what happens next!

Hunger by Jackie Morse Kessler

I spotted this one on the shelf next to Kagawa's book and remember seeing a review for it on the Book Smuggler's site. It's an urban fantasy story about an anorexic seventeen year old who is named Famine--one of the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse. I'm not sure what to expect. I forgot what Ana or Thea said in their review. O_o

So many books I can't wait to read!

Any thoughts on these?

What are you reading right now?

  1. I love the Harper Connelly series and was sad when I finished the last book. I'm glad to hear that you are enjoying them though :) I really want to read Hunger myself so I can't wait to hear what you think of it!

  3. Well, I love the Kagawa and the Vincent series. :)

I like your plan of reading graphic novels to connect with some classics. There are plenty that I haven't read & don't have time to read. This would be a great way to fix that!

No cookbooks? I was expecting to see that canning book in the loot. :)

  4. I really liked Hunger. Good for you reading books on your shelves. I have been failing at that.

  5. I heard Hunger was supposed to be very good. All four horsemen were to have their own book where instead of bringing it, they prevent but was somehow intricately tied to the type of "apocalypse." I'm very curious. Can't wait to hear about your take. :)

I remember having to read and dissect Beowulf in H.S.. In Old English. Good times. *sigh* I wish Hinds had been around then to make it more interesting.

Hope you have a fantastic weekend!

  8. Oh, a Charlene Harris glom :) I do look forward to hearing what you think of Hunger.

I was reading Kat Richardson's Labyrinth, but have put it down for the weekend to read the seventh part of Ginn Hale's The Rifter. And once I finish Labyrinth it's on to Jaida Jones' Dragon Soul (third book in the HaveMercy series...or at least I think that is what the series is called :)

  9. samantha...
I've heard a lot of people say they were sad about the Harper Connelly series ending at book 4. I hope there's at least some decent, happy ending type closure for Harper there.

I'll let you know about Hunger!

    Marg..
I'm enjoying Kagawa's Iron Fey series. I hope you get around to trying it out.

    Leslie..
I know you love the Kagawa and Vincent series. In fact, I thought of you when I got these two!

You should definitely check out the graphic novel section at your library. There's a lot of great stuff in there--not just superhero or manga.

Haha! On the cookbook comment! I just returned the canning book last month. LOL. Santa should just get it for me.. ;)

    Linda...
Glad to hear you liked Hunger. I think I'll read it as soon as I'm finished with the Harris books.

    little_alys...
Wow, you know more about Hunger than I do! I'll let you know what I think of it. My youngest sped read it the other day and said she thought it was creepy--but she tends to like contemporary chick lit type stories as opposed to urban fantasy, so maybe that has something to do with her response. She wanted so badly to tell me the ending, so at least that's indicative of it being interesting, right?

    Brandy...
A lot of interest in Hunger, so I'll try to read that one soonest so I can let you all know what I think of it.

I think there are so many more interesting ways to learn the classics these days ---including graphic novels. It could be a great way to get non-readers interested in classic literature, you know? Or can be used as "cliff notes" to the full text versions.

    Alex...
Thanks! Hope you have a great weekend and fun reading, too.

    orannia...
Another vote for my reaction to Hunger! Looks like that one's next! ;)

Wow, you've been busy with your reading! Good to see! :)

  10. LOL, when did you find the time to go to the library? :P

So how's the Charlaine Harris series?

  11. Just loved Harper and too are sad that 4 is it. That's the only one I have left to read. I liked this series. I haven't read Rachel Vincent got it on my kindle of a couple of years now.

  12. Ooh, The Beowulf graphic novel looks like it may be fantastic. I love mythology and Beowulf is one of my favorites.

  13. nath... You know me so well! Let's see... the library closes at 9 pm, so I rush in there at 8:30 pm to grab what I went looking for and if I'm lucky I have a few minutes to browse and grab more! ; )

I like the Harper Connelly series a lot! I don't know what it is about Harris' writing, but I end up strongly gravitating to her female leads... first Lily Bard and now Harper Connelly. I'm curious to know if I'll gravitate to Sookie Stackhouse, too. Someday I'll start those! :o)

Paula... I'll be reading the last Harper Connelly book soon. I'll be sad to see it end. I like Rachel Vincent's YA series. The regular teenage issues are spot on what I remember about myself as a teen and see with my daughters now. Then she seamlessly ties in an urban fantasy legend and voila! A great YA UF!

Brie... I'm really getting into the graphic novels! I'll let you know how I like Beowulf. I should be reading it soon. The graphics are very dark and gruesome. Yikes!
