Big Book Reading Challenge 2011

I found a few more reading challenges. Go ahead, laugh's on me.  :)

Pretend it says 2011 ;)
The Big Book Reading Challenge 2011 is hosted by my lovely friend orannia at her blog, Walkabout. This is the same challenge she hosted last year and the idea is to challenge yourself to read a book that is 500 pages or more that you have been procrastinating reading because of its length. My chosen book for this challenge last year was Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows which I read in August 2010. This year, my book is a toss up between the following three young adult novels:

The Sweet Far Thing by Libba Bray

The Gemma Doyle Trilogy, Book 3
First published December 2007
819 pages

InkDeath by Cornelia Funke

The Inkheart trilogy, Book 3

First published October 2008
713 pages

Brisingr
by Christopher Paolini

The Eragon trilogy, Book 3
First published January 2008
763 pages

I haven't decided which one I will read for the challenge, but I really ought to read all three at some point because they are all the third and final books in trilogies of which I've already read the first two books several years ago!!! Sooner is better than later, too, because the longer I wait to read them, the more likely I'm going to forget everything about the characters, their world and the story arc and I'll be completely lost reading these last books. In fact, I think that's my biggest reason for procrastinating picking up these books-- not their number of pages, but feeling lost and frustrated when I read them. And that they sure are long books.

Have you read either of these two series?

Which one do you think I should tackle first?

  2. Have fun with this challenge! Daughter recommends Brisingr by Christopher Paolini. Of course Daughter is rather bloodthirsty and enjoys the battles and sword play, but she does say there is a romantic angle to it as well. Oh, and Daughter said there are rumors there's going to be another book by this author after this one. (From the author himself, actually. Says he's working on the fourth book.)

  3. Thanks, orannia! :)

    LOL Brandy!
"Of course Daughter is rather bloodthirsty and enjoys the battles and sword play"
Why am I not surprised? ;)
I will keep Daughter's recommendation in mind. Especially considering that if I feel lost reading it, I can always ask her help in refreshing my memory.

I heard the same thing about a fourth book, but it's been years! Don't you think he risks losing some of his audience with so long a spell between books?

  4. I love this challenge! I'm glad to see you got through the last Harry Potter book last year, I love that series! :-) As for which one you should read I honestly couldn't help you there because I haven't read any of these books or series. Good luck and I can't wait to find out what you choose!

  5. Brisingr is the 3rd book, but not the final :( It was good, but didn't need to be that long. I'm sooooo impatiently awaiting the rest of CP's books. His story has expanded and there will be a couple more books. I don't know why the time between books is so long. I may soon lose interest if it's not sped up.

I was actually looking at Cornelia Funke's books the other day and was thinking of picking them up... They look interesting to me.

Never heard of Libba Bray, will do some research.

I joined Orannia's challenge this year again, it was fun last year and actually made me read HP7. I chose Eon by Allison Goodman. I'm thinking of Santa Olivia by Jacqueline Carey needs to be read too. I was going to do it last year, but sort of forgot :|

  6. Deanna,
The Big Book Challenge is a great idea. There were so many of us who visit orannia's blog who were avoiding certain books we were interested in just because of their length. Do you have any books like that?

    Mariana,
I think I might be leaning more towards Inkdeath and Brisingr right now because I have both of those. My library does have the Libba Bray book, though, which is how I read the first two books. Hm....

If you want to borrow the Inkdeath series from me, we have the books. Just let me know. :)

Santa Olivia is fascinating. Is it over 500 pages? You should read it regardless. I think you'd really enjoy it. Hilcia read it, too and I think she posted about it last year.

[I apologize, but I've had to disallow anonymous users to comment on my blog due to an influx of spam. I'll change it back as soon as I can. Thanks for understanding.]
