More Organic Goodness

As some of you know from my earlier posts this week, my youngest daughter has been home with the flu this week and since she's such a good sharer, she gave it to me. I was pretty miserable Tuesday and Wednesday but thankfully, I'm feeling a lot better today and even accomplished a few things. I did a load of laundry, unloaded and loaded the dishwasher, returned some library books including one that was due on Monday and for obvious reasons I didn't get out to return it, and last but not least, picked up this week's co-op share. Now I'm ready for a nap.

But first, I want to share what came in this week's order. I still have the two heads of lettuce in my fridge from the previous order so I traded this week's lettuce for two ears of corn with my friend. Believe it or not, the lettuce from two weeks ago is still fresh, although I will be eating it over the next few days before it does start to spoil. I use Evertfresh bags for my produce and although the bags are a bit expensive, they can be reused many times over and they really work at keeping your produce fresh for a long time. So in the end they're cost effective for me.

Here's what I got in this week's share:

Starting from top, left to right:
bananas, yellow onions, Hakurei salad turnips with greens,
Stayman apples, zucchini, yellow squash, a pie pumpkin, kale,
yellow corn, Bosc pears, green tomatoes, red potatoes
cranberries, mangos, carrots

My mouth was watering just handling the mangos. It's probably my body craving the Vitamin C since I've been sick, so I'll be having those tonight for sure. Actually, I think I'll go cut one up right now and eat it at the counter so I don't have to share it. :)

  2. Hey, this week my family's lucky I'm cooking at all! LOL

    I just ate one of the mangos. Oh my goodness it was so good.

    Tonight's menu is corn on the cob, turnip greens sauteed in olive oil with onion, swedish meatballs in homemade gravy over wide noodles, and ligonberry preserves. I'm short cutting the swedish meatballs by using frozen ones from IKEA. Preserves are from IKEA, too. ;)

    I woke up this morning feeling tons better! I still have a little head congestion and a coughing fit now and then, but at least I feel almost normal.

    Settling for an apple when you want a mango? Ouch. LOL

  7. Christine, I hope you feel better soon! I had that awful flu for 2 darn weeks. ((Hugs)) for you and your girl!

    I'm curious about those mangoes... did you get organic mangoes grown in our area? They're a tropical fruit and are usually imported or sent up from Florida or other warm climates.

    I grew up eating these and now I'm salivating just thinking I can find them fresh somewhere, lol! I'll eat the imported ones but they don't taste quite the same. ;)

    I love cutting them up and using them in salads, or on top of some fish dishes with other ingredients to give them a little UMPH!

    My son has a double ear infection now and just got tested for H1N1. bleh.

    i hate winter and sickness.

    Thanks, Hilcia! You had this thing for TWO WEEKS?! You poor thing! The last time I had the flu was in January 2003, and that one was way worse than this time, actually. So I do actually know what it's like being so sick for so long... I'm just so glad I kicked this one in a few days.

    As for the mangoes, they are certified organic mangos imported from Brazil. Are mangos even grown in the US? These were the Tommy Atkins variety if that means anything to you? My husband grew up eating mangos, too and often reminisces about how much better they were when you could eat them fresh right from where they are grown like he did as a kid in the Philippines. The quality of imported fruits has improved over the years, but nothing beats local grown, you know?

    We mostly eat mangos as a snack or in smoothies if they turn out to be too stringy. But I LOVE mango salsa, too!

    From my share this week, most of the items were grown in our NY/NJ region. The cranberries from MA, the pumpkin in from MI, the corn in FL, the zucchini, squash, and carrots from CA, the mango from Brazil, and the bananas are almost always from Peru.

  10. Michelle! Oh your poor little guy! I dreaded those ear infections. My youngest had them a lot when she was your son's age, too. And possibly the flu, too? Or definitely?

    Did his test for H1N1 come back positive? My daughter's pediatrician did the nasal swab test right in the office that just tests for Influenza type A and it came back positive. When I asked if she knew which subtype (i.e., H1N1 or not?) it was, the pediatrician basically told me that H1N1 is the most prevalent one going around, so it's most likely that's what she has, and that the treatment would be the same no matter the subtype. So although I don't have an exact diagnosis that we had H1N1, I'm betting that we did. When I researched the CDC website, I discovered that there are only three subtypes of Influenza A infecting humans right now and that H1N1 is definitely on a pandemic scale. So that supports what the pediatrician said and that anyone who gets the flu this season most likely has the H1N1 subtype.

    Anyway, I hope your son's test comes back negative. He's so little! :(

  12. Thanks, Brandy! I love French Onion soup, too! No one else in my family does, though, so I never make it. But it would perfect for a fall dinner after raking leaves all day, don't you think? ; )

    It is a rather colorful selection, isn't it? I honestly didn't plan to post pictures of my share every other week, but it's turning out to be a lot of fun to "stage" the shot and admire all the shapes, colors, and textures of the food!
