Happy 4th of July!

Wishing my fellow Americans a happy and safe 4th of July as you celebrate our countries independence and freedom. To everyone else, I hope you, too, have cause to celebrate your freedom wherever you live.

What kind of celebrations do you have planned for today?

Our 4th of July is going to be a rather low key one this year. My husband is in the Netherlands right now as a spectator for the Tour de France, so the girls and I (and the father-in-law) are feeling a little incomplete without him home with us, but we'll have our traditional 4th of July food for dinner and then walk down to the park to see the fireworks when it gets dark.

4th of July Picnic Dinner
Serves Four

Hamburgers & Hot Dogs
Herbed Potato Salad
Marinated Three Bean Salad
Corn on the Cob

Apple Pie with Vanilla Ice Cream

What are some of your family's traditional 4th of July foods?

I'm actually more likely to serve cut up strawberries and blueberries with vanilla ice cream on the 4th of July... showcasing the red white and blue, but this year I'm more in the mood for apple pie.

  3. Natalie: Hope you had a fun day today, too. And why were you leaving me a comment at 9:25 pm and not at the fireworks??

I actually ran out of time to make the apple pie, but we did have all the other things and made little ice cream sundaes for dessert.

I still feel like making apple pie this week, though...

Orannia: Thank you! We had a nice day, but not that same without my husband. But yeah, he saw the start of the race the other day and then the end of stage 2 I think it was(?) in Brussels today. Pretty cool, huh?

  7. Hope your day was special - even w/o the hubby. :) It sounds a lot like ours, just hanging out at home and to the park across the street to watch fireworks.

  9. Angie: You know, it was going to be baked beans in lieu of the marinated bean salad here, too, but I decided I needed to get something green into everyone.

Brandy: I never made the apple pie and I still really want some!

Gina: Glad you had a fun weekend!

  10. Nath: It would have been nice to have you here for a picnic dinner!!! I have to admit it was very yummy to have a burger. I even went over my daily calorie budget because of it, but it was worth every bite!

  11. Christine, hope you had the best 4th of July weekend!

I was busy with family having a great time. We had grilled steak, grilled chicken, grilled portobello mushrooms, salad, apple pie, fruit and ice cream, beer and lots of water to cool everyone down! It was HOT! Later, we enjoyed the Macy's fireworks display in the evening.

  15. Hils, Your menu sounds fantastic, too!!! I figured you were seeing the Macy's fireworks. Would you believe I've been born and raised in this area and in all my 41 years have never seen the Macy's 4th of July fireworks?? I should have put that on my list of 101 Things to do in 1001 Days! ;)

Brandy, If I lived closer I would have come over and help you bake them! :)

Chef Dennis, thanks so much for the visit. Your blog is great! I love the recipes and your job sounds really awesome! What a great mission you have undertaken. That cheesecake recipe with the berries.... Wow.

nath, the burger was definitely worth going over for.

My husband got home on Tuesday afternoon. Yay! :D
