The Perfect First Date

Twenty years ago today, I went out on a most amazing date that would change my life forever.

We met through some friends of my college roommate and her boyfriend, hanging out together at a study center after hours with a motley group of undergrad engineering students (my people) and physics grad students (his people). I tried to study and he totally distracted me. We would play video games together on the Mac Classics in the labs there. Tetris, Risk and my favorite--Crystal Quest.

One night we went out on this double date with the purpose of fixing up one of my friends with one of his. Our match making didn't work out so well for our friends, but we hit it off right away. I was so thrilled when he called the next day and asked me out for the following weekend.

So on May 5, 1989, we had our first official date. He took me to dinner at a nice Chinese restaurant. Really good wonton soup and great conversation. Some of the conversation was serious, some of it was silly, and some of it was flirty, but it was always comfortable.

After dinner, we went to the movies and saw Stephen King's Pet Cemetery. The perfect excuse for sitting close enough for him to put his arm around me.

After the movie, we went out for a drink at a jazz club that was on the first floor of this fantastic cajun restaurant downtown. We sat close to each other at a little round table lit by a single candle, holding hands and just talking and listening to jazz music. To tell the truth, it was a wonder I could hear anything above the pounding of my heart. I was so happy to finally be on a date with a guy who I was into and I was pretty sure was into me, too. It just felt right--and exciting and romantic-- to be with him.

After a while, we got up to leave the jazz club, and I knew this awesome date was coming to an end. I was afraid to even dare hope for the perfect ending to this perfect date with a kiss when he dropped me off at my dorm. But I hoped anyway.

Fortunately, I didn't have to wait too long for my hopes to be answered.

As we walked hand in hand down the sidewalk outside the club, he took a few steps around the corner of the building, pulled me to him and kissed me. The kiss was a little bit sweet, and a lot bit passionate, making my insides tingle from my heart down to my toes. The chemistry between us sparked and I couldn't help but think that this was the beginning of something really special between us. It was.

After that date, I never dated anyone else.

Just the same guy.

I fell in love with him.

And married him four years and some months later.

Twenty years later he still makes my insides tingle from my heart down to my toes with a mere kiss.

I'll never ever forget the magic of our first date.  I love you.

  1. Great story!!! You are sooo lucky!

  2. I love that. What a wonderful tribute.

And I love that somebody else still celebrates the day that they got together all these years later. This year is our 24th anniversary of our first date. And we still celebrate it, too.

  3. Isn't it lovely to be reminded that HEAs are not just for the books we love. Congratulations to you both!

  4. What a sweet wonderful story Christine!

It is so wonderful you are still so happy together. :)

    Warm Regards

  5. Aw! What a lovely story. Cute pics too.

  6. *sniffle*

So sweet! Happy First Dativersary, Christine and Mr. Christine.

  7. Awwh! What a sweet story. Like Kati said: Happy First Dativersary! :)

  8. (Kati, that's a great term!)

    Happy FirstDativersary, Christine!

  9. Too sweet! I love stories like this. :)

  10. Christine, reading your account of the date I felt like I was reading a book. Bated breath, edge of my seat, and everything! Thanks for the sweet, sweet story.

  11. What a wonderfully romantic story, Christine! Happy first date anniversary to you and your hubby :)

  12. Aww, what a sweet story! It's obvious you're absolutely crazy about your hubby. :)

  13. Great story Christine. Time flies doesn't it? No wonder this place is called "The happily ever after..." You are living one.

  14. *wipes tears from eyes*

Yes, your story made me cry Christine! But in a good way! In a 'I think that is absolutely beautiful and THAT'S what I want' kind of way :)

And I', still keeping my fingers crossed you'll be back in your house soon!

  15. Hey Christine, you're first date was May 5th? Me and Shawn's first date was May 1st, 16 years ago. We still celebrate it! I think we always will. And we also married 4 years and some months later! :)

I hope you guys had a great day.

  16. Hehe, Christine I've given up in the fact that the series has huge gapping holes in it. Yeah apparantly JM is a reincarnation of Darius because after JM's transition he turned into Darius and has Darius's feelings of whatever. I think Darius and Xhex might have had a thing together. And we all had to figure that one out by ourselves. But seriously, who has the time to?

How are the girls doing? No recent updates on them?

    Hope all is well :-)

  17. What a wonderful story! Hope you had fun celebrating your first date anniversary :)

  18. Aww congrats what a sweet story. I'm glad you guys still feel the same way that you did back then!

  19. That is just beyond great! Big hugs and congrats to both of you for finding each other. *sigh* It makes me sad because I recently broke up with my boyfriend, who I felt was the one. I have yet to let it really sink in, even though it's been over 2 months. I refuse to think about it...maybe not entirely healthy but it beats crying every night *shrugs*

Sorry about the sob story, I haven't really talked about it with anyone. But it's so nice to hear other people and their loves =D

  20. Thanks for all the lovely comments!

It's great to see that others acknowledge their Dativersary, too! (thanks for the new terminology, Kati! *wink*)

For those of you still waiting for your true love, I hope you don't have to wait long. Everyone deserves a happily ever after.

(((Mishel))) Oh, man. I'm sorry for your break up. I hope things look up for you soon.

  21. In case anyone was wondering where the this comment comes from, it's in reference to a review of Lover Avenged that I Heart Book Gossip wrote on her blog that I commented on there and that she commented back here. *g*

I Heart Book Gossip:: I knew about JM being Darius since the end of Dark Lover/beginning of Lover Eternal when the Scribe Virgin offered Darius the chance to go back... but I was getting tired of no one in Caldwell, NY figuring it out already! I asked Katiebabs today if the JM/Darius identity comes out in Lover Avenged and she said no. I suppose it makes sense for that storyline to come to the surface in JM's book... but still. Ward's been stringing that story along for five books!!!! This series is like a soap opera! LOL!

The good news is that Kate's back from her trip to England, so now I can treat her to coffee and a scone in exchange for borrowing her copy of Lover Avenged! Yay!

Thanks for asking about the girls. They're doing well. Busy with school, friends, dance, gymnastics, girl scouts, chorus, orchestra .. you know... the usual.

  22. Ron and I met on June 14,1976. For the number of years we celebrated that date as well as our anniversary - August 29, 1976 (yep - we married quick - something I don't recommend in hindsight - though it worked for us). It's such and 'aaawww' thing that you have such great memories of your first date all these years later, that you married the man of your dreams and still going strong. Congratulations to the both of you!!

  23. (((( Kristie )))) Thank you!

Aww... you and Ron knew a good thing and jumped on it (and each other I'm sure! LOL!) Your union was obviously meant to be. :)

  24. what a sweet wonderful story. It does my heart good. I wish I could remember our first date but I'm not one to remember such things unfortunately. I think it was sometime in July. Happy First Date day.

  25. I can't believe I missed this post! what a wonderfully sweet story Christine! Thank you so much for sharing that!

  26. *mooshy sigh* Happy Anniversary girlfriend! :)

  27. Thank you, Renee, Tracy & Terri! :)

  28. Oh, it's so sweet to know that 20+ years later and your relationship is still strong....wedded bliss is not just for the books, eh? Congratulations and best wishes for many, many, many more years of happiness.

My husband and I don't celebrate our first date but we do acknowledge the date. Although for us, it's only been 5years and 4 months so when we reach the 10th or so anniversary I'll be sure to celebrate this date. :)

  29. Miss Christine...seriously, every time you talk about your man I get goosebumps...and a whole lot of envy. LOL!

There's nothing better than an awesome first date. I wish I had more of those instead of dates from hell. *sigh* Maybe one of these days. :)

  30. Oh, and my parents will be married 35 years this year & in January they always celebrate their first date. It was a blind date and they were married 5 months later. :D
