Austen In August

Confession: I have never read a book by Jane Austen. O_o
But that's going to change this summer because I plan to read at least one Jane Austen novel in August. I joined the Austen In August event hosted by Adam who blogs at Roof Beam Reader, I've decided to finally crack open the single volume collection of seven Jane Austen works that I own. I bought this tome several Christmases ago for myself and it still sits on our bookshelf unread. Now the question is which book should I read first?

Have you read Jane Austen? If so, which book is your favorite?

In other words, which of the following Austen books do you suggest I read?

Sense and Sensibility
Pride and Prejudice
Mansfield Park
Emma
Northanger Abbey
Persuasion
Lady Susan

  1. I have read Pride and Prejudice but that is it! I love the time period for the books and read Austen knock offs quite a bit.

  2. I second Persuasion. So, so love this book.

  3. Persuasion! It's so romantic. Which books have you seen film adaptations of? It may be better to read a book you're not already familiar with.

  4. When I was younger I used to pick P&P all the time, but lately I've become obsessed with Persuasion, so I'll go for that.

  5. Do I have to choose one? I love all of Austen's works. My favorite is Persuasion, but Pride and Prejudice is a close second.

  6. Thanks so much for your suggestions! I asked for suggestions on twitter the other day, too, so between that query and your responses here, it looks like Persuasion might be the one I go with. If I enjoy it and have the time to read two Austen novels, I think I'll also try to get to Pride and Prejudice.

Holly: I've seen the film adaptation of Pride and Prejudice (with Keira Knightly), or at least parts of it! It was either on tv or we rented it on netflix or something like that. I actually don't remember it well.

  9. I'd say Persuasion too, but P&P is close. The only other one I've read is Sense and Sensibility and it's not even close.

  10. Lisa Thanks for chiming in. I'm leaning towards Persuasion and if I love it, I'll try to also read Pride and Prejudice but maybe that's ambitious for one month.

  11. Pride and Prejudice, no doubts!
I'm reading one of hers I haven't yet, Mansfield Park, for this month's TBR challenge. We can compare ideas!
    Have fun!
