I made a quick visit to the library last week to return The Witness by Nora Roberts--which was very good, by the way. If you're a fan of Nora Roberts, don't miss this one. I rated it 4 stars on goodreads. The story is solid, the characters are really great and the romance is realistic and satisfying. If all the elements were just a bit more powerful, I would have given the book 5 stars.
My 13 y.o. came with me on this library trip, which was great because I wanted her to grab some YA books to read. She tends to read the same beloved books [Harry Potter, Percy Jackson and Pretty Little Liars] over and over again and I know she'd find some other books to love if she'd just give them a chance. She only grabbed one, but I grabbed three others, hoping she'd give ALL FOUR a try if they were sitting around on the coffee table. These are also books that I've been interested in reading [except maybe for The Lying Game]. Hopefully I'll get to them, too. Here's what we brought home:
Across the Universe by Beth Revis
Divergent by Veronica Roth
Scorpio Races by Maggie Stiefvater
The Lying Game by Sara Shepard
Have you read any of these YA books?
What are you reading right now?
I've read Divergent, Across the Universe and Scorpio Races. I loved all 3. I just finished the sequel to Across the Universe, A Million Suns. Fantastic sequel. I've just started Gone Girl by Gillian Flynn. Great loot. I look forward to hearing that you think of Divergent, Across the Universe, and Scorpio Races.
ReplyDeleteI know very little about YA fiction these days but I've heard only wonderful things about Maggie Stiefvater's books. I hope both you and your daughter enjoy your loot!
ReplyDeleteOh my word, read The Scorpio Races NOW.
ReplyDeleteCool loot!!
ReplyDeleteLots of nice looking YAs! I hope you enjoy them all :D
Ooh, I hope your daughter enjoys the YA selections -- they look nice! I saw Across the Universe at the library recently and considered getting it -- maybe next trip!
ReplyDeleteI've read DIVERGENT (not bad) and have am waiting on SCORPIO RACES from my library! Which one was your daughter's pick?
ReplyDeleteI haven't read any of those books, but I've had my eye on Across the Universe ever since it released and still have it on my wish list. I'll look forward to your thoughts on that one. :)
ReplyDeleteDaughter has just finished Divergent and is now reading the latest and last Artemis Fowler book. I recently read a Girl Named Digit (YA) and loved it. (Girl mathematical genius helps bring down eco-terrorist group.)
ReplyDeleteHope you have a great weekend!
Divergent was very clever, somewhat gritty in a Hunger Games sort of way. Across the Universe put me in mind of Aldous Huxley's Brave New World. The Scorpio Races is sitting on my Bookshelf, but I've not had a chance to read it yet.
ReplyDeleteA really endearing new release I would recommend is Seraphina by Rachel Hartman...and along the lines of Dystopian like Divergent and Hunger Games there's Partials by Dan Wells.
Happy reading :-)
I haven't read any of these but I have heard really good things about The Scorpio Races.
ReplyDeleteenjoy your loot!
I'm dithering on the reading front ATM as I just finished a great series and I keep going back and re-reading it rather than getting into anything new. But one of my library holds just came due, so I've unfrozen it. Kat Richardson's Downpour (urban fantasy).
ReplyDeleteI really, really loved Divergent so I hope that you get the chance to read that one before it is due back at the library. Enjoy all of these!
ReplyDeleteLinda.. Wow, you've read almost all of these books already. I'm so impressed! I'm going to try to get to them all except for the PLL one. That one's just not my thing.
ReplyDeleteClaire.. I like Maggie Stiefvater's writing voice and I hear Scorpio Races is probably her best work so far, so I'm really looking forward to it.
Angiegirl.. Haha don't worry. I will get to Scorpio Races this summer. I know you loved it--yours was the first review I read. Going on vacation next week and don't want to lug a big book with me so it will have to wait until August.
Alex.. Thanks! I hope I enjoy them all too!
whimsicaldesperation... Hi! So nice of you to visit my blog. :)
My daughter is reading Across the Universe now. So far she has told me that it's rather sad and a bit strange. But she wants to keep reading it. She's curious. I'm just so glad she's reading something new! lol!
Li.. My daughter's pick was Across the Universe. I grabbed Divergent and Scorpio Races because I knew I wanted to read them.. and I grabbed The Lying Game because I knew if all others failed, she'd read that one in a few hours. Those are her guilty pleasures. She complains that they're stupid but can't help but want to read them all. lol!
Hilcia.. I hope I get to Across the Universe by the end of the summer. I get so interested in YAs, bring a stack home and then tend to want to read adult fiction instead. haha.
Brandy... Oh you're YA pick sounds great! I haven't seen or heard of that one before but will now keep an eye out for it! *girl power*
Hope you're having a great weekend, too!
Katja Weinert... Hey there! Thanks for visiting my blog! :)
Wow thanks for your feedback on these books!!! I have my eye out for Seraphina. A friend of mine recommended it to me back in June. I think my library's getting in too!
Thanks for the book recs! :)
Marg.. Thanks! I'm looking forward to Scorpio Races!
orannia ... I'm not familiar with that Kat Richardson book. Hope you like it! :)
samantha.1020 ... I hope I get to Divergent before its due date, too. Hopefully there isn't a wait list for it when it's time to renew. Ha!
ReplyDeleteRead Across the Universe, Divergent and The Scorpio Races and enjoyed them all. Hope you and your daughter enjoy them as well!
ReplyDeleteI've seen all four in blogland a lot, but have not read them ^_^; LOL. So did she pick up more than the one she chose?
ReplyDeleteLeslie ... I would love to get to them all, but you know how that goes.. ;)
ReplyDeletenath.. She did! She read The Lying Games, but I think she speed-read it. Although it is a book that lends itself to quick reading. I am still hoping she'll read Scorpio Races and Divergent. I think she might if she sees me reading them first. We didn't take them on our vacation with us because 1--they're chunky hardcover books and 2--I didn't want to lose them, but now that we're home there's no excuse not to crack them open.
