Lover Unleashed by J.R. Ward
A Novel of the Black Dagger Brotherhood
Book NINE
"You're still reading this series?"
Why yes, as a matter of fact, I am. I'm not even embarrassed to admit it.
Library Loot is hosted over at Marg's blog this week. :)
I skimmed this one.
ReplyDeleteI have been losing interest in the series to be honest, I still like the romance but there is little of it these days and it's all about the war and the lessers and how much the SV sucks, and all that which I don't really care about.
I read it, but...there is a rant on my blog about it. Unfortunately, for me, JR Ward's writing style is becoming less appealing.
ReplyDeleteI look forward to hearing what you think :)
Have never read J.R. Ward. Just how many are there in this series?
ReplyDeleteHer books aren't my thing, but I do know they have a huge following. I don't judge. Enjoy your book!
ReplyDeleteBook nine! Yikes. I imagine that things could get a little stale by book nine.
ReplyDeleteAlex, I have been missing the quality and depth of the romance in the last several of these books, too. I don't mind the way the series has drifted from paranormal romance to urban fantasy... but not at the expense of quality character development, you know?
ReplyDeleteorannia, I kept up with your mini-rants on goodreads while you read this one, but will save your blog post for when I've read it myself. I don't want to decide it's going to irk me before it even irks me. LOL.
Angie, I could say you're not missing anything by missing this series by J.R. Ward, but well... it is an interesting reading experience! I happen to love it, even though in recent years it also frustrates me.
There are nine books in the series, this one being the latest release. The books are rather popular and have hit the NYT best selling lists in the last couple of years. It started out as a dark, sexy, edgy paranormal romance series with a sort of .. hmm... family saga appeal because the main characters are a small group of flawed warriors who have lived and fought together for many years, protecting their race and humans from evil. Over the years the style of the stories has shifted somewhat... alienating some readers and others like me just can't let go even though we acknowledge it's not as good as it used to be.
Brandy, I don't judge. LOLOL! Thank you. ;))
Sean, you know.. it's interesting about the progress of this series. It's not that the series has gotten stale at this point. To me, the issue is more about changes in the author's writing style. Some of the characters seem to have drifted out of character along the way... and the language kind of deteriorated. There's a ton of brand name dropping and a street slang that's so bizarre. Like the author is trying so hard to be hip, but it comes off cheesy and well.. unintelligent, I guess. I try to block that stuff out, but it's not always easy. It often pulls me out of the story. But I just have to know what's going to happen next so I keep reading the books as they come out, anyway. :/
I'm so glad you're still enjoying this series, Christine. I'll look forward to your thoughts. :)
ReplyDeleteLOL! Reading between the lines, what Hilcia really said is: "Hey, glad someone's still enjoying this series, cuz it ain't me! Thank you in advance for the good laugh I'll have when I read your thoughts on this one!
ReplyDeleteAm I right, or am I right? ;)
It's the brand name thing that keeps tossing me out. Although now I keep reading them because I enjoy the contrast of giggling through these tough guy stories. But I wait for the paperback to show up in the library picks shelf.
ReplyDeleteWell we all know the Warden is the Queen of branding!! And yes her lingo can get really old sometimes, but I do so love the Brothers and I've invested all this time in the series that I will read this one too. It's already sitting on my bookshelf right next to Shadowfever by Karen Marie Moning. That book will be read 1st, then on to Payne's story. Vishous is my fave bro, though I hate Jane. Cheesy, well maybe, addicted, absolutely!
ReplyDeleteUm, and nope, I'm not even a little embarrassed :)
Will be choosing an E author for May Christine ;)
Paula
Tomes Devotee
Beth, I know!! You know what gets me worse than the brand name thing? The abbreviated words. obvi = obvious, abso = absolutely, etc.. And the improper use of the word "doing" ... most of it sounds so stupid. Yet, I'm so hooked! lol
ReplyDeletePaula, Oh you still have Shadowfever on the shelf!? Wow, you're in for TWO treats!
If V is your favorite brother, you will enjoy Lover Unleashed. He gets a lot of page time in this one. And maybe you'll come to even like Jane. I like her in this one. I actually thought she was okay in V's book, but the ghost thing was a fail for me. It's handled much better now, but still kind of "not right."
Can't wait to read your E author book choice in May!
I finished Lover Unleashed. In between rolling my eyes and giggling over some of the brand name dropping and pseudo-ghetto jargon... I really enjoyed this book!!!!
