Library Loot XXXI

Library Loot is a weekly event co-hosted by Claire from The Captive Reader and Marg from The Adventures of an Intrepid Reader that encourages bloggers to share the books they’ve checked out from the library. If you’d like to participate, just write up your post-feel free to steal the button-and link it using the Mr. Linky any time during the week. And of course check out what other participants are getting from their libraries! This week's Library Loot is at Marg's.

Of what do you think when you hear the word loot?

Stolen goods? Acquired by some thrilling adventure? Like pirate loot? Exactly!

This week, my library loot is definitely feeling like pirate loot, because I practically stole books from my library! Okay, not literally, but it sure feels like it! I went to my library's used book sale last weekend where the going rate was $8 for all the books you could fit in a paper grocery bag! I am seriously efficient at packing a grocery bag. Check out all that I brought home for only eight bucks:

At left:
Memnoch The Devil by Anne Rice
Servant of the Bones by Anne Rice {duplicate}

Because for some reason I have been on an unofficial quest to acquire a complete set of Anne Rice's Vampire Chronicles and The Lives of the Mayfair Witches in hardcover {in used condition}. Rice's Vampire Chronicles are practically considered classics in vampire literature. Not quite considered as such compared to Stoker's Dracula, but nearly classic nonetheless. Years ago, I found several of Rice's hardcovers at a used book sale for dirt cheap and decided they'd make a great addition to my personal library. Besides, they have great cover art and the spines looks gorgeous on a bookshelf. Then I acquired a few more when my friend Mariana was cleaning out her personal library. I think I have only two or three to find to complete my set.

The next stack of books are nearly all young adult novels, except for the two at the top.

From bottom to top:
Clockwork Angel by Clarissa Clare
The One Where The Kid Nearly Jumps To His Death And Lands in California by Mary Hershey
The Thin Executioner by Darren Shan
A Northern Light** by Jennifer Donnelly
Hard Love** by Ellen Wittlinger
Betwitxt by Tara Bray Smith
Pure Sunshine by Brian James
Murder on the Orient Express by Agatha Christie
Local Habitation by Seanan McGuire

** Michael L. Printz Award for Excellence in Young Adult Literature Award Honor Book

The last stack of books consists of a few literary fiction, chick lit and romance novels along with a few Christmas themed novellas.

From bottom to top:
Don't Look Down by Jennifer Crusie and Bob Mayer {duplicate}
Away by Amy Bloom
Hope in a Jar by Beth Harbison
Seducing an Angel by Mary Balogh
Little Chapel on the River by Gwendolyn Bounds
Shopgirl by Steve Martin
Julie and Romeo by Jeanne Ray
Love Walked In by Marisa De Los Santos
Skipping Christmas by John Grisham
The Christmas Shoes by Donna VanLiere
When Christmas Comes by Debbie Macomber
Waiting For Nick & Considering Kate by Nora Roberts

All those books for $8? Now that's what I call loot! :o)

Anything there that you've read or sparks your interest?

  1. I love the Friends of the Library sales!

And you certainly made out like a bandit, woman--go, you.

I have all of Agatha Christie's mysteries and am working on getting her few other novels (written under a pseudonym). The thing is, I originally read and owned the Spanish translations, so now I'm in a quest to find them in English. It's a long standing quest, as the book budget is already stretched thin (have you seen how SLWendy is pimping these days?) but I'm in no hurry.

I also have the two Nora Roberts's, in the original edition  and while I own a copy of Seducing an Angel I have not been able to get past the first few pages. Weird, because I usually devour Mary Balogh's books.

Of the rest... no idea, really.

  2. Friends of the Library Sales are THE BEST! The next one at my library is in March. I'm going to try to get there on the first day then for a better selection. I was there at the very end for this sale.

Do you still own the Agatha Christie collection in Spanish? I will keep an eye out at the next sale for any Agatha Christie books for you. Do you have a list of the ones you're still looking for?

I kind of like the quest to collect books from used and or hand me down sources as opposed to new. It's fun, right? :)

  3. You really, really, really did good, Christine!! :) LOL, you are indeed a packer :) I hope you enjoy them a lot :)

Sigh, I wish we had library sales like that here... the only problem is that most of the books are in French :(

  8. Thanks, nath! Can you believe I got all of those books for only $8?! So exciting. :)

You don't like to read fiction in French? Or is it more that the books published in French aren't from the genres you prefer?

Rowena, Thanks! You mean I have a YA book that you haven't read yet?! Shocker! LOL! I was so excited when I saw that one, especially since it's still a fairly new release!

motherect, thanks for the visit. Love Walked In looks like a great little read. I'm looking forward to it.

Alex, hey! Thank you. I'm sure I'll spend many hours with my nose in these books! :)

Linda, thanks! I love my loot. :)

  9. I'd say you do know how to pack a grocery bag! That is definitely a loot :).

I have two large boxes of books I keep meaning to drop off at my library. One of these days when the temperature rises some I'll take them in.

  11. Oh my goodness that's the bestest haul!! I'm so jealous! LOL You have some good reads in front of you. I liked Waiting for Nick and Considering Kate.

I have Away by Amy Bloom in my tbr pile - I can't wait to see what you think. Maybe it'll give me the urge to read it sooner. :P

    Happy reading!

  12. Your library sale is officially awesome! I wish ours did that! I've read Don't Look Down by Crusie and the Nora Roberts book. I've also read Skipping Christmas. Hope in a Jar looked interesting. I keep forgetting to see of my library has it.

Have fun with all those lovely, lovely books!

  13. That's a great pile! I'm really enjoying Loved Walked In - and I read another book by Jeanne Ray (I can't remember the name, but it had to do with cakes!) that was very good too. Happy reading!

  14. My closest physical library is a small community library shared with the school. That beng said I have scored some good titles in the 20c sales.

I am the same way with Raymond Feist as you are with an rice - almost whole set of hardbacks looted from garage sales and libraries

  15. Amy, I haven't donated books to my library in a while. The last time I gave a bag of cookbooks I didn't want anymore and you know... I looked in that section at the sale to see if any of them were still there and they were all gone! I was happy to see they found new homes.

Marce, Thanks so much for visiting. I will be by in the morning to join in on The Stormchasers discussion! Sorry I didn't find time to do so today... was busy shoveling tons of snow. Literally. :/
    Thanks for following me! :)

Michelle, I DID rock this sale. Already looking forward to the one in March! LOL!

ames, I don't know when I'll get to read Away. I saw it around so much a while ago and was drawn to the cover art, so I grabbed it. :)

Brandy, does your library have a "Friends of the Library" type group? If so, maybe you could suggest they organize a used book sale with patron donated books?

I'll let you know how Hope In a Jar is when I get to it. Looks fun.

Audrey, glad to hear you're enjoying the story! The premise sounds very touching.

The Jeanne Ray title is Eat Cake, right? I just searched the author on amazon. That looks like a fun read, too. With recipes for cake, too! :)

    Thanks for visiting.

Sean, book bargains can't get much better than 20c!
Garage sales! I hadn't thought about that market. Thanks for the tip! :)

  18. Our library does have used book sales. But, they're not as good as yours! Hardbacks are $1 and paperbacks are anywhere from $.25 to $.50 cents. And most books aren't in the greatest condition. I wish my favorite UBS hadn't started going downhill with their selection.

  19. I'm just used to reading in English now. I feel French is too strict and formal as a language... and the wording is just so long ^_^;

  20. Great haul, Christine! You cleaned out and have some great reads ahead of you.

  21. Hi Samantha! :)
Hopefully I'll get to Clockwork Angel soon! I was so lucky to find it at the sale!

    Hi Paula,
Sure thing. I already left a comment at your blog and Marce's in the comments for this month's book club.

    Brandy,
I think those are the prices during most days of the sale. The last day is when you get the whole bag for $8. But my library does get a lot of newer books in excellent condition to sell. We're pretty lucky.

    nath, that makes sense.

Hilcia, more books for the TBR. I can't complain. ;)
