To Kill A Mockingbird Read-Along

Much to my own surprise, I've never read To Kill A Mockingbird by Harper Lee. I don't know how this escaped the attention of my honors high school literature teachers, but there you have it.

When I got wind that Adam was contemplating a re-read and perhaps a read-along, I jumped at the opportunity to fill in the gap in my classic lit experience.

The plan is to read the book in just 17 days, which sounds doable, but with a busy vacation upon me in just a few days, a 12 hour time difference between Asia and the US and uncertain Internet access, my participation will likely be limited. However, I've got some long flights ahead of me so I'll be toting my 50th Anniversary copy of To Kill A Mockingbird along in hopes of finishing it by the time I get back.

To join, visit the Master Post: To Kill A Mockingbird Read-Along over at Adam's. You can see the suggested reading schedule there, too.

Have you read this classic?

  1. Yes, I read it several times (for school and private tutoring) and loved it. After reading it, maybe watch movie? *sigh* Ah memories. Granted, I noticed a lot of issues after I got older, but this was still a great story. Also a quick read.

Before that, have fun on your vacation!!! :D

  2. Alys, is it going to make me cry on the airplane? I don't want to need tissues or get a headache mid flight!

  3. I'm glad you're reading it with us, despite your busy schedule! And, how much fun for you! I have never been out of the country (USA), but I hope to start traveling soon. It's kind of tough, now, being a full-time student. The only time I could go would be during summer, but that's when I need to work... or decide to live out of a van or something, instead.

  4. Christine - Naw, no crying involved. It's not exactly fun or funny, but no crying. It's equally nostalgia (as it is a loss of innocence and growing up story) and history - the racial stuff is very upsetting. It was also a quick read. :)

  5. Thanks, Adam! I totally understand your travel woes. We didn't go on a single vacation or weekend getaway for the first 10 years we were married.. work, kids, lack of funds, etc... We have been making up for lost time in the last couple of years. Our girls are older (14 and 18) so they're easier to travel with and we were able to save up for these trips!

Anyway, I'm looking forward to #MockingBirdReads! Crossing my fingers for LOTS of free wi-fi hotspots in Asia! lol!

  7. I've read this one and I loved it!!! It's both innocent and hard because one can't help but feel a bit sad over the losing of innocence...but it's such a great book!!

  8. Hi Sonia! Sorry for the late reply. I was out of the country since July 20th and had limited internet.. I used all my alotted data posting pics on instagram. ha!

I started reading To Kill a Mockingbird on the flight home and have been really enjoying it. I'm also re-reading Meljean Brook's Guardian series and just HAD to start Demon Moon as soon as I got home yesterday. I hope to finish both of these books this week while recovering from jet lag. ;)
