Library Loot LI

Library Loot is a weekly event co-hosted by Claire from The Captive Reader and Marg from The Adventures of an Intrepid Reader that encourages bloggers to share the books they’ve checked out from the library. If you’d like to participate, just write up your post-feel free to steal the button-and link it using the Mr. Linky any time during the week. And of course check out what other participants are getting from their libraries! This week's Library Loot is at Marg's.

In fiction:

Neverwhere by Neil Gaiman

I have had this book on my to-read list for ages. Thanks to an upcoming read along as part of the Once Upon a Time V Challenge hosted by Carl from Stainless Steel Droppings, I am finally going to read it!

In nonfiction:

The Pioneer Woman Cooks:  Food From My Frontier
by Ree Drummond
This is the second cookbook written by Ree Drummond, also known as the Pioneer Woman from her popular website thepioneerwoman.com. I might review this cookbook for an upcoming Weekend Cooking post.

Food Rules: An Eater's Manual by Michael Pollan
Am I THE last person to read this little handbook?
I went looking for the illustrated version with artwork by Maira Kalman, but it was checked out to another patron, so I took the plain, unillustrated version instead.

Forks over Knives: The Plant-Based Way to Health
Edited by Gene Stone
This is the how-to companion to the feature documentary Forks over Knives. It has several essays as well as 125 recipes. We've had the documentary sitting in our Netflix queue for a while now and will hopefully watch it soon. Have you seen it?

The Complete Idiot's Guide to Glycemic Index Weight Loss
by Lucy Beale and Joan Clark-Warner, M.S., R.D., C.D.E
I've learned a lot about the role of a food's glycemic index has on our bodies and I'm hoping that if I study up on it a bit more, it might just be the key to my success in leaping off the proverbial weight loss plateau and losing those last stubborn pounds. Hopefully this book will give me the right tools to do that.

In music:

Making Mirrors by Gotye
I love the song "Somebody That I Used To Know" and so I jumped at the chance to borrow this CD from the library when I saw it show up in my library's Wowbrary newsletter. I'm actually listening to it while I type this!

What are YOU reading?

  1. Woohoo! Library loots!
Gaiman has always been a hit or miss with me so I'd be happy to hear what you think. :)
I haven't heard anything about Forks over Knives but I will definitely look into it now. :D
You are not the last person to read Food Rules: An Eater's Manual by Michael Pollan since this is the first time I've heard about it. Lol. Please review and I shall see about getting it from the local library. :D

I am currently desperately looking for some good books to read. Lol. It's hard for any book to follow after Dogsbody by Diana Wynne Jones. Maybe get the backlist of Tessa Dare. I just started reading her stuff and they're great!

  2. I haven't read Food Rules. I've read In Defense of Food and I have The Omnivore's Dilemma on my shelf.
I love that song too. I had it on repeat on my drive home last.

  3. Nice loot! You got a lot of interesting books!
I'm intrigued by that song you mentioned! I'll try to listen to it :D

  4. little_alys :: I've only read his stuff for kids, so I'm looking forward to an adult novel by Gaiman.

Oh go borrow Food Rules from the library. It's a super easy read--like a little handbook. VERY common sensical but things that are too easy to forget in our SAD world. [SAD=Standard American Diet]

I liked Tessa Dare's first series best if that helps. Although her latest book is getting really good reviews!

Linda :: Did you like In Defense of Food? I'll probably get to it eventually.. or at least check it out.

Alex :: Is what's popular in music in the US at the moment also what's popular in Mexico? If so, then you've probably heard the song but just didn't know the name of the song/artist. Let me know what you think!

  5. Great loot, Christine! I look forward to hearing your thoughts on The Glycemic Index book - I, too, am trying to lose those last couple of pounds (very stubborn). And I love the Pioneer Woman - her blog, Tasty Kitchen Blog, is on daily read!

Just finished reading Running for Dummies. Now onto The Book Thief by Marcus Zusak.

  6. OK - lost the last comment *sigh*...

I'm interested in hearing what you have to say about the glycemic index book - I'm trying to lose those last stubborn pounds and it's frustrating when they just don't go no matter what I do! And I love the Pioneer Woman - her Tasty Kitchen Blog is a must-read every day!

I just finished Running for Dummies. Now onto fiction - The Book Thief by Markus Zusak is up nest!! Happy Reading :)

    Enjoy your loot.

  8. Neverwhere is the only Gaiman I've read so far (back in 2010, also for the Once Upon a Time Challenge) and I loved it. Enjoy your loot!

  9. I've started Lover Reborn, but I have to read fast since you can't renew new books!

  10. I have one of Goyte's songs on my phone, but haven't really listened to any of the others. I may have to do that. Ooh, love The Pioneer Woman's first cookbook. I didn't realize there was a second one, I'll be checking my library for it! Right now I'm reading Crystal Gardens by Amanda Quick.

Hope your weeks is going well!

  11. I have only read one Neil Gaiman book (Stardust) and I'm a bit nervous to try his adult novels, but I have heard so many good things that I'm sure you'll enjoy it!

  12. @ Janet .. I've only skimmed through the Gylcemic Index book, but from that I can tell you there's a lot of great info in there explained really well. Hence the Idiot's Guide thing, I suppose. ;) Apparently there are tools contained within to help you determine your personal GI numbers per day. Interesting. I'll try to report back when I've read more.

I should look for Running for Dummies at the library. I'm considering attending a Chi Running Workshop in June with a friend of mine. Have you heard of that running style? When is your next race?

Oh and The Book Thief has been on my to-read list for AGES!

    @ Aisha .. Thanks for visiting! :)

@ Marg .. The other Gotye songs are growing on me.. but I still think "Somebody That I Used to Know" is the best one on the album. I think Kimbra is a wonderful complement to Gotye and I hope they work together in the future.

@ Claire.. Great to hear that you loved Neverwhere! I'm looking forward to reading it in May.

@ luv46kdz .. Lover Reborn is long, but a quick read. Lots of action and dialogue. I think I read it in 4-5 days.. hopefully you can too!

@ Brandy .. As I told Marg, the Goyte songs are good, but "Somebody That I Used to Know" is my favorite. Maybe your library will get it, too, so you can check it out without committing to buy the entire album.

The Pioneer Woman cookbook is okay. Gorgeous photos as usual, but the food is not really along the lines of "healthful cooking." Still fun to look at though!

Oh you scored a copy of Crystal Gardens early! Didn't it just come out? Hope you're enjoying it!

Hope you're having a good week, too! :)

@ Iris ... I have a copy of Stardust on a shelf somewhere in my house, but I haven't read it. So you'd say it's young adult then? I'm looking forward to reading Neverwhere! Thanks for visiting. :)

    1. Hey, Christine - they've been holding classes here for Chi Running and one of my friends took the initial and does the follow-up lessons/workshops. She loves it - heard a lot of good things about it!! If it wasn't so expensive, I'd be signing up, too ;)

Next race is supposed to be Halifax at the end of May, but I've been having knee issues and my runs are not going well. Hmmm, maybe I should be forking over the money? BTW - I really enjoyed Running for Dummies!

  13. Ugh, Christine, even your reading is healthy! LOL.

  14. @ nath .. I know, right? The more I read, the more convinced I become that our diets should consist of LOTS AND LOTS AND LOTS of vegetables, nuts, seeds and whole grains. Everything else in small [meat, fish, dairy] or no [refined sugar, flour and artificial ingredients] quantities. Now to just put what I know into practice..

p.s. Of course, READING ROMANCE IS ALWAYS GOOD FOR YOU!

  15. I just read Gaiman's Stardust, and I hope you enjoy his work. I'm trying out a few recipies from PW's first cookbook, but as we don't spend the day working cattle I'm a bit more careful with the caleries.
