Library Loot XVIII

Library Loot is a weekly blog event that encourages bloggers to share what books they borrowed from the library that week. To participate, simply make your Library Loot post on your blog and link it using the Mr. Linky link at Marg's blog Reading Adventures or Eva's blog A Striped Armchair. This week's link up is at Marg's.

Library Loot day is usually on Wednesdays, and I didn't expect to post anything this week since I'm still trying to whittle down my current stack of library books, but I got hold of this one at the very last minute so it turns out I have some loot after all! I had to put in a little extra resourcefulness to get this book, too.

Lover Mine by J.R. Ward
Black Dagger Brotherhood, Book 8

Lover Mine is the eighth novel of the Black Dagger Brotherhood, a.k.a. the BDB series by author J.R. Ward. I started this series back in October 2006 and was easily sucked into this action packed, suspenseful, sexy and romantic paranormal world that Ward so ingeniously crafted. As what often happens when an author becomes a NY Times Bestseller, the Black Dagger Brotherhood books are now released in hardcover first, followed by mass market paperback a year or so later. I do love this series, but vowed not to buy the hardcover releases. Partly because I don't want to spend the money on hardcover and partly because I have the first six books in paperback and I want the whole series to match! I had the seventh book, Lover Avenged on my bookshelf for several months before picking it up on a whim earlier this month and poof! I was sucked right back into the world like I'd never left. As soon as I finished it, I wanted to read the latest book, Love Mine right away. I searched out online card catalogs and found only ONE library in my area that carries Lover Mine. It just so happened to be the ONE library that has restrictions against non-residents borrowing ANY new release from their library and they consider a book a new release for ONE FULL YEAR. Son of a gun!

I was disappointed.

But I was also determined.

I asked my friend who lives in that town to put a hold on it for me. I warned her of the racy title and cover art -- she's on the shy, conservative, easily embarrassed side, but you know what? True friends will push themselves out of their comfort zone for their best buddies, because she got Love Mine for me!!! YES! She loves me! :D

Now if I could get her to read the series . . .

Do you read the Black Dagger Brotherhood series?

If you used to, but don't anymore, what book did you stop at and why?

  1. Hi Christine,

So glad you were able to get a copy. I still love this series although I could do without the hardcovers. I finished reading Lover Mine last week and loved it. I think it's even better than the last one. Hope you enjoy it. :)

  2. As you know I just started the series. In fact I'm reading the first book right now. I'll be singing it's praises on my blog next week. See if we can find some more converts ;)

  3. I read it! Love it. However, I just finished Lover Enshrined so I still have Lover Avenged before I can get to Lover Mine.

MY fav of all the books was Z's. But I think LM will likely tie or take its place....

Glad your friend got it for you!

Hope you enjoy it! I did, although I did start skipping all the italicized bits ;)

  6. I stopped reading after Butch's books. It wasn't a conscious decision, just happened. I own all the rest except this one, but I don't seem to have any great incentive to pick up the next one so I can keep reading the series.

  7. Anna... I'm glad you liked Love Mine! It has been getting great reviews, so I am really looking forward to reading it. I haven't started it yet, but will as soon as I finish Ten Things I Love About You by Julia Quinn.

Linda... Yay!!! Another BDB crack addict is born! Fans of the series call it "crack" because it's so darn addictive and once you read one, you just want more. I'm not addicted anymore, but yeah... I do like a hit once in a while. :O

Mollie... Another BDB fan! Lover Enshrined may be among my least favorite so far. What did you think? Lover Avenged was very good. It was good to finally learn about Rehv's past and his ties to the sympath world. Plus I really liked Ehlena. I LOVED Z's book, too. Wrath & Beth's story might be tied though.

Mariana... BOOK PARTY!! Thank you!! Why didn't I think of that!? Duh! Okay, so if no one claims your set of BDB paperbacks by the book party, I'll take them and either give them to my friend or use them as my lending set as I recruit more BDB addicts. Especially since I have signed copies of the first four books and the compendium. Wouldn't want them to get lost. :D

Lover of Romance... So glad to hear you enjoyed it! I'll let you know my thoughts when I've read it. It's a long one though.. may take me at least a week! I'm a slow reader... :/

Marg... That kind of happened to me after Phury's book Lover Enshrined, plus I was kind of meh about it going to hardcover. I do think Lover Avenged was better than V's book and Phury's book and so far Lover Mine has been getting really great reviews. I'll see how I like it soon enough. It's next on my reading queue.

  8. These books are great when you can read the best bits aloud. Make sure you pronounce all the extra "h"s!

I like them, but I wait till my library shows me the paperbacks.

  9. I do read the Black Dagger Brotherhood series. I've liked every book, even though I might have wanted a bit more romance in the last ones. I'll get to read Lover Mine in November, because I'm waiting for the paperback release :P

Libraries here in Finland don't tend to get that many romance novels in their collections, but I'm keeping my fingers crossed they'll get this one and in hardcover - that way I could get my hands on it faster :)

  10. Hi Christine! Bit late to the fun... I don't read the BDB series anymore. I stopped at Butch's book. I've never been really into it... especially after seeing how some people were getting pumped up for this series. So I lost interest and just stopped.

  11. ...and partly because I have the first six books in paperback and I want the whole series to match.

So with you on hat one. And YAH for such a lovely friend!

I almost hit the wall and gave up on the series after reading Lover Avenged. Lover Mine was definitely better, but if I'm honest I still prefer the earlier books. I'm mainly reading now for Qhuinn & Blay's story.

Oh, and I'm interested to know what you think of Lover Mine. I think there is a whole plot line in there that could have been left out, but that's just me :)

  12. Beth... I think if I read these books out loud, I'd start laughing. Some things are best kept inside the head! Including those extra "h"s! LOL

So you're a fan who not only waits for the paperbacks, but even waits for the library to show them. Clever, girl!

Thanks so much for visiting and commenting. You're blog is great--looks like we read much of the same genres. :) Although not many picture books get read around here anymore. :(

  13. Maija... I agree that the last several books were lacking in the romance department. I mean, it was there... but it wasn't emphasized or explored as deeply as I know Ward is capable of.

I hope you're library gets Lover Mine sooner than later. That would be a nice treat for you. :)

nath... I think a lot of readers stopped at Butch's story. I speculate that it's because that's where the series not only started with some holes in the world building, but also because it started to lean away from the romance of the leading couple and more towards an urban fantasy style where the conflict and and plot is the center focus. Plus what you mention about getting turned off from a series by the excessive hype around it.

orannia... Ha! We are not alone in insisting our book collections "match" like that. I have talked to quite a few bibliophiles who feel the same. So basically we're freaks, but we're not the only ones. LOL!

I got hardly any reading done on my long weekend, so I haven't started Lover Mine yet, but will share my thoughts when I do. :)

I want Tohr's story. And I guess I want to learn more about Payne and see how she mixes in with the Brotherhood dynamic. And of course, Qhuinn & Blay. I guess that means I'll keep reading ...
