Love your breasts... get a mammogram

I had a mammogram today ... have you had yours?

If you're 40 years old or older and haven't had a mammogram yet ... it's time.

If you have a mother, daughter, sister or grandmother who had breast cancer, it is recommended that you start regular mammograms five years before you reach the age of their diagnosis, or by age 35.

For more information about breast cancer and mammograms, visit The National Breast Cancer Foundation website at http://www.nationalbreastcancer.org/ and also the National Breast Cancer Awareness Month website at http://www.nbcam.org.

The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has a mammogram and breast health pdf booklet that you can view at Mammograms & Breast Health. This booklet is not copyrighted and can be freely duplicated and distributed.

Don't wait to get your mammogram. Early detection could save your life.

  1. Sounds like you're having a terrific day!
Thanks for the reminder - so many of us forget until it's too late!

  3. I've had my 1st mammogram about 4 years ago when I detected a lump. It was removed about 2 years ago when it started growing. It was benign. I've been going for an ultrasound scan every year and a mammogram once every 2 years. I can't stress enough the importance of regular screening.

  4. Very important post Christine - thank you! I lost my mother to breast cancer...it was picked up during a mammogram, but...eventually it spread. I know my mother would not have been alive as long as she was if the breast cancer hadn't been detected and treated early. (FYI - I don't need to panic about mammogram yet as my mother's breast cancer was postmenopausal. I will say though, there is a link between HRT and breast cancer.)

I am taking my aunt for her mammogram next month :)

  5. Gina, it is good! I am late getting my baseline mammogram as I recently turned 42, so today is a good day because I finally got it done!

Brandy, I know you're a bit younger than me... but be ready. 40 sneaks up on you! ;)

Jace, thank goodness the lump you had was benign and that you are so proactive in your follow up screenings. Thank you for sharing your story. xo

orannia, I'm so sorry for your loss. :(

There is indeed a link between HRT and breast cancer. Breast cancer is so closely linked to our estrogen levels across our lifetime.. something we need to be cognizant of our whole lives. Some of that is out of our control... but we can influence some of that with our lifestyle choices. I'm sorry if HRT contributed to your mom's cancer. :(

  6. I love the post title Christine. It's not time for my mammogram, but I do keep an eye on my breasts (Oh that didn't sound right!) because I have a lot of cancer that runs in my family! Thanks for the reminder! Being healthy should be priority #1

  7. I did the same post last week! I just had mine done too. Not fun, but a must.

How are you? I kinda got a reprimanding by the hubs that too much time is spent on here, and the kids make fun of me, pretending to be typing on an air keyboard so....

Any who, I've been picking pomi's and I'm wondering if I'll have the wherewithal to get out those arils!

  8. Christine - thank you. It...wasn't fair, but then life isn't fair. I am thankful though that my mother had a chance to travel one last time before she passed away...and that her passing wasn't as hard as it could have been. Saying that, watching someone slip away has to be one of the hardest things I've ever done.

And WRT HRT, yes. At least the link is known now. Forewarned is forearmed :)

  9. firepages, thanks so much for the chuckle when I read your comment in my email the other day about keeping an eye on your breasts! You made me laugh, but in all seriousness... kudos to you. It's so important to do regular monthly breast exams and to get in the habit of doing so when you're young.

Paula, I haven't been by your blog--or many others aside from my own in several days. I'm going to try to get around to visit all my friends within the next day or two.

I understand your need to back off from blogging a bit. It's a difficult hobby to juggle when you've got lot of responsibilities and a busy family. Give yourself some time to find a balance that works for you... you'll figure it out. :)

I was thinking of you about two weeks ago when I saw the first pomi's show up in my local supermarkets! They don't look amazing just yet... kind of small with a lot of blemishes, but for all I know they could be perfect inside. I'm not even sure how much they are either. I will check it out next time I'm out. They might be expensive right now since the season isn't in full swing yet. I can't wait to see some pictures! I'll visit your blog today. xo

orannia, I'm glad your mother had that last chance to travel before she passed away. Hopefully it gives you some comfort to know she enjoyed herself on her trip and brought home some happy memories for herself to think about when things got difficult for her again. xo
