Play FreeRice and feed the hungry.

FreeRice is a non-profit website founded by John Breen in October 2007 who donated the site to the United Nations World Food Program in March 2009. It's an educational online vocabulary game that generates donations from sponsors the more it gets played. I played it once or twice over a year ago, and then forgot it for a while. Then I was at LeeAnn's blog a few days ago and saw she had a link to FreeRice on her sidebar. Of course, I clicked straightaway to play. I've been playing on and off for the last couple of days, generating free rice for hungry people around the world. My vocabulary level is improving, too! I'm currently at level 42 out of 60 and determined to raise it.

All money raised by the site goes toward feeding the hungry. You can find information about FreeRice in the FAQ section at the FreeRice website and at the UN World Food Program website. Want an abbreviated version of the FreeRice program and it's success? Read this article.

Go play! Click here on FreeRice or click on the FreeRice graphic on my my sidebar. It's fun, easy, educational and you're helping to feed the hungry.

  3. Heh, heh. I have whiled away MANY an hour playing this game; it's my second favourite next to Free Cell and some days a brain exercise to get myself in gear before heading for work, and I impress myself with how many I get! And oddly enough I thank romance novels for a LOT of that knowledge since many of the words are quite obscure - yet used in those novels we love so well.

  4. I've been to FREE RICE before too, but it's always great to be reminded and go play again.

  5. I'm glad you guys are going to go play... or play some more! ;)

Kristie, you're so right! I knew a lot of words from reading romance. I think reading historicals helped the most with the more prevalent use of old English language and even some archaic words.

  6. What a cool thing! I'll have to check it out when I have some time. My internet time has been sporadic lately.

  7. Hi Amy! Definitely give it a try, but it is addictive--not quite as addictive as Guitar Hero III or anything, but still, don't say I didn't warn you! :)

  8. I absolutely love Free Rice and my kids do too. They think it's very cool. They love trying to guess the meanings of the words - even on the upper levels.
